Illinois Senate Republican Leader John Curran (R-Downers Grove) released the following statement in response to the sentencing of former Illinois Speaker of the House Michael Madigan:
“The judge has passed sentence, and it should serve as a stark warning to any public official in the state of Illinois that all their actions should have the best interest of the people in mind. Corruption is not a victimless crime: it leads to higher taxes, outmigration, and a loss of trust on our democratic system. The Democratic Majority must allow ethics proposals to receive committee hearings and votes and stop stifling reforms put forward by the Republican minority from full consideration in the General Assembly. This should be a turning point in our state that spurs bipartisan ethics reforms to end the culture of corruption in Illinois.”
