I want to thank the Illinois Attorney General for alerting me to a delay by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (ILEPA) in turning over information regarding the emissions of Ethylene Oxide from the Sterigenics facility in Willowbrook, specifically the annual emissions reports from 1996-2008.
Delaying the release of these reports, which I'm pleased has now been released, was unnecessary and I have sent the Director of the ILEPA a letter voicing my disappointment.
With these reports now in hand, the Attorney General's Office can continue their investigation into reopening Sterigenic's air permit, which I requested them to undertake. I am also grateful for their actions as I have introduced legislation (SB 3630) which would do the same. However, the Attorney General's Office has the ability to work in a more expeditious manner than the legislature. And time is of the essence.
With newer science available regarding the testing of Ethylene Oxide levels, it is critical we reopen this permit and take all steps necessary to ensure the air we breathe is safe. If the public's health cannot be assured, then Sterigenics must be shut down.
